Disappearing 9-patch Baby Quilt

One of my best friends is having a little girl in February. I found a pack of fat quarters with the perfect color scheme and added a few other prints that I fell in love with.
Disappearing 9-patch baby quilt
Isn't that adorable?
It's raining outside right now, so indoor pictures will have to do.

The quilt is made with 7 inch squares and there are 9 different prints. The finished quilt is 5 squares across by 6 squares down and measures about 35 inches x 42 inches.

To make this quilt you'll need to cut:
  • 30 squares - 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (3-4 of each print)
  • 30 squares - 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches (3-4 of each print)
  • 60 strips - 2 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (6-8 of each print)
Piece together half of your 2 1/2 x 5 1/2 strips with the 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 squares to make 30 strips that measure 2 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches

Piece together the other half of your 2 1/2 by 5 1/2 strips with the 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 squares so that you have 30 pieces measuring 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches

Now lay out your pieces to balance the colors
This is a good time to take pictures and send them to a friend to help balance the colors

Sometimes it helps to lay it out and walk away for a second. When you come back, you'll probably see something to move and balance so that prints and colors are even throughout the quilt.

Much better.

Now you can finish piecing together your squares and then sew them in rows. Make sure that you are ironing your pieces so that it will lay flat when it comes to sewing together your rows and with quilting.

With the top of the quilt finished, I decided to use minky for the backing. With minky I don't even have to use batting. I decided to do some straight line quilting in a cross-hatch pattern, and then bound the edges with a lavender satin to finish.

 Viola!
