I hadn't planned on this being a tutorial, so I don't have pictures as I went, but here's a pattern and tutorial for a very cute crayon wallet that saves us when we go out and need to keep Turbo busy for a few minutes.
Crayon wallet to keep toddlers busy |
- 2 pieces of coordinating flannel
- 1 piece of stiff iron-on interfacing
- Crayons
- 4x6 pad of paper
- Hair band
- Button
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread
- Inner lining - 7 1/2 x 15 inches
- Outer fabric - 7 1/2 x 15 inches
- Crayon holder - 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches
- Paper pocket - 10 x 9 1/2 inches
- Interfacing - 6 3/4 x 14 1/4 inches
2) Fold crayon holder piece in half lengthwise to make it 2 3/4 x 7 1/2" (the double thickness is important to hold the stress and stretch of crayons with a toddler). With right sides out, iron and sew along the fold.
3) Fold paper pocket in half, right sides together, to make it 4 3/4 x 10" and stitch up the left side. Turn right side out and iron. Sew along top fold.
Pattern with dimensions for finished crayon wallet |
4) Pin crayon holder to left side of inner fabric, open sides to edges as shown above. Stitch top seam and every 1 1/2" down to bottom edge.
5) Pin paper pocket to bottom right corner of inner fabric, open sides to edges, and stitch along right, bottom, and middle sides. Leave top open as pocket.
6) Measure from the right edge 4 3/4" in and stitch up to separate the large pocket into 2 pockets.
7) Turn inner fabric over and center your interfacing on the back side. Iron on based on interfacing instructions.
8) Iron down top 1/4" of outer fabric
9) Pin front and back together, right sides together. Half way down the right side, pin your hairband in place with the large loop to the inside, and the weakness of the band to the outside. Stitch both sides and bottom of crayon wallet.
10) Flip your crayon wallet right side out and fold in top edges. Stitch around entire crayon wallet to close top and create a finished edge.
11) Fold your crayon wallet in thirds and line up where your button should go. Stitch button in place.
Now you've got your finished crayon wallet. 2 crayons will fit in each pocket of the crayon holder initially, but it will stretch out to allow for more over time. I recommend a 100-150 page pad of paper, but it will fit up to 200 pages.
Enjoy!
This looks fantastic, and so easy thank you for sharing
